Footscray Performing Arts Center

Location: Footscray, Melbourne
Type: Civic
Purpose: Architecture Studio Project

This project is about the performing arts center as a learning environment. so the idea is to make this performing arts center a place for students from the surrounding schools to make use of the facilities and learn something that is regarded as performing arts.

The title of this project is Diversity of Shared Culture to break it down “diversity” means different facilities that are integrated into the building to reach its full potential as the size of the site was not that big.
while shared culture can be defined in two ways. Such as shared culture in terms of programmatic, each room got different a kind and way of doing their own activity. the culture of sharing information is happening through visual observation and active interaction between civic and student. or student to student. the interactivity is achieved by combining different programs in the same room which forces people to pass or see others while they were doing their own activity at the same time. While the shared culture in terms of civic is to create a place that is flexible to use for the community. as Footscray also has people from many diverse backgrounds and cultures. So taking this as an opportunity to create connection and communication through a series of diverse functions and individual paths. The result of the final floorplan is having a main circulation in the middle to direct people easily while still retaining the idea of mixing programs in the same room. The strongest part of his building is the zig zaggy and fragmented floorplan resulting from the experiment. For the Civic Programs, it has an outdoor stage where people can hold their performance and share it with the community. Traditional food cooking class to promote the intercultural, and also because the site is close to traditional market and supermarket. Meeting room because there are cell groups of people that are learning different languages and need a space to hold this learning activity.
