Casa Habitat

Location: Castlemaine, Victoria
Type: Residential
Purpose: Architecture Studio Project

The name of this project is Casa Habitat, which means the house for habitats. The purpose of this project serves bigger agenda to restore the impact of the Anthropocene through the deforestation of nature but also providing response to the housing crisis in Castlemaine. This multistorey residential building is meant to shelter humans, animals, and plants so that all of these living organisms could live in the same place harmoniously as it is in the wilderness.

As the impact of the Anthropocene can already be felt through the climate crisis, a provoking action is necessary to awaken people’s conscience and care for the environment. While this proposed project is located in the Castlemaine, selective observation has been made to fully understand the current existing nature that is scarce around the urban but made too obviously separated from the bushland reserve of Kalimna Park. And therefore, this project would be the bridging of nature in the middle of the urban through its radicalized form and space that allows nature to be untouched.

The main building form is made from the experiment of tracing existing vegetation from Kalimna Park to the urban area, combined with elements of existing enveloped space in between to create a connection between nature, building, and site context. The curvy form is allowing the form to look very abstract, while playful to look at. This abstraction of form is slowly transformed into something more uniform towards the higher level, following the characteristic of nature that is allowing growth.

The nesting façade is acting as a sculptural object that is allowing existing local ivy plants to grow radically to further wrapped the building in greens naturally, creating a dramatic view that is visible for everyone as it is located in a very accessible location, creating a point of attraction.

Around the upper level, the units are intended to accommodate younger adults where it has shared balconies as a social space between inhabitants for each level. Balconies were designed in different sizes to recreate the asymmetrical character of nature.
